Stupid, Stupider, Stupidest

It’s up to you – decide whether the headline here applies to the sender or the receiver

Marketing messages, commercials and advertisements from Canada’s top telco, Internet and wireless service providers are designed to gain our attention.

Maybe even our trust.

Certainly our money.

Perhaps they are even designed to get a lawyer’s attention: the ads are in court – again!

The argument over which company offers the “best” or “fastest” or “most reliable” network has long been topic for watercooler chats and Twitter feeds. The conversation has spread across the country, and from the wired to the wireless world.

Bell Aliant, the Atlantic Canada telco, wants a New Brunswick court to stop Rogers Communications from advertising that it has the fastest Internet services in the country.

Rogers’ claims are misleading and “no longer accurate,” according to a spokesperson – adding that Bell’s net is “superior”.

Bell Aliant’s claims have not been proven in court.

Rogers still advertises on its website that it offers “most reliable broadband connections”.

Last fall, Rogers fought in court with Bell Mobility over which company had the “fastest and most reliable” wireless network in the country.

Basically, the court said no one does – ruling that both companies must drop the claims in future wireless advertising.

Recall, too, that Telus and Rogers have fought in court, over the word “most” as in “most reliable network” – and the word lost!

A BC judge threw down a restraining order, and ordered the word removed from ad materials.

Meanwhile, Quebec’s Internet and cable provider Cogeco has also been the target of complaints about its advertising, and the claim it ran the “fastest” Internet speeds in two regional markets.

The Competition Bureau ruled that Cogeco’s claims were misleading, saying there was no way to verify the claims.

So, we’ve posted on this before (and probably will again).

But let us know what you think – is there an ad that made you a believer? Or do you just tune all this stuff out?
