Now that we have clocks built into all our apps and  gadgets, it will take something pretty special to make a timepiece tempting to techies.

From digital watches that use the same low-power, high resolution E Ink technology found on eBook Readers to seriously cool multifunctional watches and various oddities, there is a resurgence of high tech watches that put a spin on timekeeping.

Nixie Watch

Favoured by tech icon and Apple founder Steve Wozniak, the Nixie watch uses some retro-technology to tell time.  The Nixie is a two-digit wristwatch using Nixie tubes, a forty-year-old display technology that is delightfully easy to read.

The watch requires no button-pushing to operate. Just hold the watch at your standard viewing angle, and the hours, then the minutes, will appear in perfectly-formed, 14mm tall, glowing orange digits.  Functional and unique, the Nixie watch is also very accurate.

Cookoo Watch by Peter Hauser

A Kickstarter project  that raised funding from interested backers over the Internet, the Cookoo watch is a serious techie’s timepiece. Designed to work as an adjunct to a smartphone or tablet, it can notify users of alarms, appointments, text messages, emails, texts and tweets.

Coming at the end of the year, the Cookoo Watch will also be programmable and can even trigger an alert for your phone in the event that you misplace it.

The  best thing about this watch is that the backers are helping out by giving feedback  on the features and design of the Cookoo watch.

Phosphor World Time Sport

Phosphor’s  new World Time Sport with E Ink  display enabled watch is a buttonless and touch enabled timepiece.

Using the same technology used in eBook readers with clear E Ink displays and touch lens operation for the ability to change modes with simple finger swipe across the case.

The new World Time Sport offers the ability to select from 24 time zones for one display mode, while optionally displaying a second time zone simultaneously .

The dual time zone display can also be configured to simply display the time of day or both the date and time in either over-sized or conventional-sized segments.

These unique capabilities are packaged in a sleek, ultra-thin, curved case only 9.3mm thick. Incredibly versatile, the new World Time Sport gives user’s an assortment of different functions and display modes
