There are so many great tech companies innovating from around the world, many of which we get to explore at international trade shows like CES. Canada plays a crucial role in the tech space, with lots of audio, appliance, mobile accessory, software, and app brands originating from the Great White North. Along with established brands, there are creative start-ups, too.

In celebration of Canada Day 2024, we’re highlighting 7 exciting tech products from 7 impressive Canadian tech brands.

Totem Acoustic LOON Monitor

Totem Acoustic is not only a Canadian company, based in St-Leonard, QC, the brand’s speakers are also engineered and handcrafted in Canada. Founded in 1987, the company has been going strong for 35 years, recognized around the world as a premium hi-fi audio brand. Like many other speaker company backstories, Totem Acoustic’s founder Vince Bruzzese decided to create his own speaker brand when he couldn’t find one that was able to perform to his standards. He wanted something to help him share his passion for music with others, and Totem was born.

What better speaker to get to celebrate Canada Day than one named the Totem LOON Monitor? Is there anything more distinctly Canadian than the loon? Available in three finishes, the speaker offers deep and tight bass and can produce full bandwidth sound, even at lower volumes. Boasting a 5.75-inch woofer, 1-inch laser-etched textile soft dome tweeter, and matching magnetic grills, a pair is about $1,600.

Fluance RT85 Reference High Fidelity Vinyl Turntable

Established in 1999 in Niagara Falls, ON, Fluance was developed by music lover Deepak Jain who couldn’t find a speaker system that could replicate the live concert feeling he loved and wanted to hear. So, he developed his own. Since then, the company has grown to offer turntables as well.

Among the many models the company offers is the RT85 Reference High Fidelity Vinyl Turntable ($685), which comes in four finish options and features as Ortofon 2M blue cartridge, acrylic platter, speed control motor, and vibration isolation feet. The turntable has received rave reviews from customers who praise everything from the build quality to the audio reproduction; not to mention the company’s customer service as well.

Totinit Unisex Cross Body Sling Bag – Passport Pro Edition

Totinit was founded in 2016 by Brian Herd, who has worked for decades in Canadian retail, distribution, and manufacturing representation. Based in BC, he started the company when he was unable to find a carrying case that he could use for travel that met all his needs. From there, he developed the Totinit line. Pronounced “tote-in-it,” the line includes several products, from RFID wallets to travel cases for electronic accessories, a mini backpack and crossbody bag, and a sling bag designed for carrying essentials, like your passport.

A redesigned version of the traditional fanny pack, the Totinit Unisex Cross Body Sling Bag – Passport Pro Edition employs a patent-pending modular design that includes removable pockets. Wear it from shoulder to hip and neatly organize your items, whether it’s a passport and phone for travel or wallet and keys for a day out. There’s a large pocket for a smartphone that has stretchy sides and a magnetic closure. A larger pocket is lined with RFID blocking material for your passport, wallet, or other important items. It even comes with a carabiner clip.

Kanto Audio YU6 Powered Speakers

Headquartered in Langley, BC, Kanto Audio broke onto the scene in 2007 and has been shaking up the desktop audio space since. The company makes a colourful line of powered bookshelf and desktop speakers as well as passive speakers you can pair with an amplifier, powered subwoofers, speaker stands, and headphone stands.

Of course, to celebrate Canada, you need to go with the Kanto Audio YU6 powered speakers in gloss red. The speaker does come in a variety of other finishes, including crisp white as well if you want to get a set of red and white and create an homage to Canada in your office or living room. These compact speakers offer big sound through the Class D amplifier and 200 watts peak power. With Bluetooth, you can stream tunes right from your mobile device or computer. There’s also a phono pre-amp for connecting a turntable along with optical and auxiliary inputs. Grab a pair for about $580.

Instant Brands Instant Pot Pro Plus Smart Wi-Fi Multi-Cooker

Yes, Instant Brands Inc., parent company to the ingenious Instant Pot small kitchen appliance, merged with Corelle Brands in 2019. But did you know that the product was invented in Canada? It was founded by Robert Wang, Yi Qin, and three more Canadian partners in 2009, all from Ottawa. Together, they developed the Pot and the rest was history. Sadly, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2023, blaming high interest rates and mounting debt due to issues accessing credit. However, Instant Brands was acquired by private equity firm Centre Lane Partners and now operates under Instant Pot Brands.

While the company eventually expanded to develop all types of small appliances, from blenders to air fryers, coffee makers, and more, the Instant Pot is the one that started it all. There have been many iterations launched through the years but the most high-tech is the Instant Pot Pro Plus Smart Wi-Fi Multi-Cooker. Like the others, it can perform everything from pressure cooking to slow cooking, steaming, sauteing, baking, and even making homemade yogurt. This model works with the Instant Connect app to provide access to more than 2,000 recipes, and remotely release steam at the push of a button on your phone, even from another room. This model sells for about $278, but if you can do without Wi-Fi, there are many others at different sizes and price points.

AtmosC A Series Air Purifier

AtmosC has three locations in Canada, in Laval, Sherbrooke, and St-Eustache, QC. Established in 2014, the company counts biologists, engineers, researchers, and scientists among its team members. The brand makes air purifiers and vacuum cleaners like the AtmosC A Series air purifier, designed to purify the air in an up to 1,500 square-foot room.

Available for $800 (on sale for $600 at the time of this writing), the A Series air purifier uses a 9 Phase filtration formula that includes HEPA, activated carbon, UV, and other filters. The company says when the unit is running, it can help destroy 99.997% of viruses, bacteria, mold, allergens, dust, chemicals, and odours in the air. Operating at an ultra-quiet 24dB night mode, you can see stats about air quality in the app and even control the purifier from your phone.

Caseco iPhone Wallet with MagSafe

While some processes and materials are sourced from countries like South Korea and China, the majority of Caseco’s processes are based in Canada, with the company’s headquarters in Toronto, ON. The brand makes a variety of innovative phone cases and screen protectors for the most popular types of smartphones, including iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Pixel, as well as other accessories like wireless chargers, charging cables, car mounts, and phone charms and chains.

The iPhone Wallet with MagSafe is a unique offering. Rather than always using a wallet case that has only a few slots to hold some cards, this one is the size of an actual wallet, able to hold much more. But it also secures to the back of the phone using powerful magnets. This way, you can keep your favourite MagSafe case on the device and attach the wallet when you need it or remove it when you don’t. (Theoretically, you could also use this with an Android phone if you have a MagSafe case on it). Yes, the wallet adds bulk. But it’s a neat way to carry both your phone and your wallet, leaving your traditional wallet at home. Made of vegan leather, it also doubles as a kickstand and sells for $35.
