Owners of Lenovo ThinkCenter models M702 and M90z desktop PC’s take heed. A massive product recall is ongoing to replace faulty power supplies that are possible fire hazards.
Two instances of ThinkCenter models catching fire have resulted in a global product recall affecting 188,000 Lenovo desktops and all-in-one models sold between 2010 and 2011. Lenovo has traced the problem to a faulty component in its embedded power supply.
This brings to light just how delicate some of the all-in-one models can be. With the power supply residing within the chassis, LCD screen, processor and all the other components needed to power the PC.
All owners of the desktops should stop using them, unplug them and and verify if they have one of the affected units by checking this page to determine whether their ThinkCentre M70z or ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one desktop PC is affected by the recall.
Below is a more comprehensive statement from Lenovo.
“In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Lenovo is voluntarily recalling 188,000 ThinkCentre M70z and ThinkCentre M90z all-in-one (AIO) desktop PCs sold worldwide between May 2010 and March 2012 (Previously, the announced recall included 160,000 systems built between May 2010 and December 2011).”
Lenovo found that due to a failure of the power supply in the affected all-in-one PCs, the system can overheat and pose a fire hazard, bursting into flames. Lenovo has received two customer reports of fire that resulted in damage to the PC.
Effective immediately, Lenovo is offering free power-supply replacements for all affected ThinkCentre M90z and ThinkCentre M70z all-in-one desktop PCs.
