2013 has been a huge year for smartphones. The market saw major releases in both hardware and operating systems. We also saw some truly remarkable devices change the game in many ways.

HTC One

Launched earlier this year, the HTC One has endured and still remains one of the most compelling smartphones in any category. Superb build-quality and materials, excellent screen and a novel new UltraPixel camera plus HTC’s software like the Zoe photo and video generating app and BlinkFeed news and social screen set it apart from the competition.

The HTC One has resulted in the HTC One mini, a scaled down and more affordable version as well as the HTC One max, which is a phablet version. HTC has a good blueprint for the future with this enduring smartphone.

Apple iPhone 5s

Ushering a new era of 64Bit computing in mobile as well as a unique Touch ID security feature, the latest iPhone is a fine example of a singular product refined and honed to be the best possible smartphone in the market. With a brand new iOS 7 operating system and an established ecosystem of apps the iPhone isn’t just the freshest smartphone around, multiple tests have proven it to be he most powerful in its class.

Motorola Moto G

While it may not have the exciting voice and gesture features of its more expensive sibling, the Moto X, the Moto G is a far more relevant smartphone to come out of Google this year. It costs only $200 off contract yet at a price that’s one third that of flagship Android devices, manages to offer incredible performance, access to the latest Android OS versions and an all-day battery. Designed to fill the void in the entry-level as well as emerging markets, the Moto G could very well become “The People’s Smartphone.”

Nokia Lumia 1020

The Lumia 1020 is the only true flagship Windows Phone that made it out this year and it features all the great hardware to showcase Microsoft’s mobile OS. The killer feature here is something no other smartphone can touch, the combination of a 41 megapixel camera and arguably the best software for a cameraphone. Giving user’s unrivaled DSLR-like control and the ability to create and share truly stunning pictures.  WhatsYourTech.ca is giving away a Nokia Lumia currently.  Enter for your chance to win!

BlackBerry Q10

The true modern QWERTY-keyboard enabled BlackBerry Q10 might seem like a nostalgia play or at least a way to secure dwindling users of what was once the leading light in smartphones. The Q10 brings the great keyboard experience to the modern smartphone age running on the BlackBerry 10 platform. It is an elegant, robust and well-designed device that loyal BlackBerry users have been waiting years for.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The third generation Note from Samsung is the best of breed phablet that shows unlikely care in build quality and materials. Coming at a time when almost  every company has a supersized smartphone, the Note 3 shines as an evolved and mature product which fits into its own ecosystem and even ushered in Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch as an accessory.
