Google has acquired BumpTop, a Toronto-based developer that has produced a 3-D computer desktop that integrates the latest in human interfaces with a realistic physics engine to produce a unique user experience. Check out this video posted by one of the developers:

The project has its roots at the Dynamic Graphics Project at the University of Toronto. It was operating out of the Toronto-based Extreme Venture Partners, a venture capital firm with a reputation for helping bright stars to shine. Neither Google nor BumpTop are disclosing any details, but the Globe and Mail seems to think the price tag on the deal is between $30 million and $45 million. Good for you fellas.

We could hope to see this technology find its way into Google products such as Android or Chromium OS. How cool would it be to have an Android powered tablet with this sort of desktop interface? In the mean time, the BumpTop interface is no longer available for download, so we’ll probably have to wait to see it released again by Google.
