More than any other competitor to Apple, Microsoft and Google seem to have the most at stake. Both companies originated as OS and software creators and now see, like Apple, the benefit of making the whole widget, packaging it and pushing out not just products but supporting ecosystems for apps, entertainment and accessories.

More than hardware, though, Apple’s made some major moves to iOS specifically on iPad that give it even footing with any desktop operating system. A new Files app brings a file structure to iOS 11-enabled iPads and, by extension, makes it easier to create folders and organize files using touch.

Apple has succeeded in making the Apple Watch a notable category. But like the iPod before it, this can only grow if Apple makes it cross platform (i.e. available to Android or even Windows 10 users). New adoption is the only way to really grow a niche product like this, and bringing Apple Pay or other features to a wider audience may help Apple Watch become the profitable new category Apple expects it to be.
Apple has realized that they need to continue creating pro-level desktops, not just as cool proof of concept statements that they are still innovators, but because serious and loyal customers rely on these machines for their livelihood.
